ROBERTO DI MATTEO last night admitted that Chelsea are staring into the Champions League abyss.

The holders are in danger of becoming the first holders to go out after the group stages. It means the Londoners are now three points behind Shakhtar and just one ahead of Juventus.

Di Matteo said: “This defeat hurts, we absolutely need to win our remaining home games, for sure.

“The only consolation tonight was the draw for Juve in Copenhagen.

“That shows how tough this competition is but we have to win at home, starting against Shakhtar.”

That return match is in a fortnight and Di Matteo wants a big improvement.

Shakhtar’s Alex Texeira opened the scoring after three minutes and Fernandinho made it 2-0 after the break. Oscar netted Chelsea’s late goal.

Di Matteo moaned: “The early goal helped them massively, it’s always difficult when concede early.”

Chelsea are poised to hand John Obi Mikel a new five-year deal.

The Nigerian midfielder, 25, is due to be out of contract next summer.
