Brendan Rodgers has praised his side’s character after a morale-boosting three points over Tottenham at Anfield, their third-consecutive win.

Liverpool rallied from 2-1 down to win 3-2 thanks to some poor defending from Spurs and a Steven Gerrard penalty eight minutes from time.

The win moved the Reds up to sixth in the table, leapfrogging their Merseyside rivals Everton, and they are now just two points behind Arsenal – though they have played a game more.

“We’re on a great run and we knew this would be a severe test of our qualities and our character,” Rodgers told reporters.

“For us to get the three points was fantastic and I’m delighted for the players because they’ve worked ever so hard.

“You could see the mentality. This was a real test and I think we had to show different characteristics to what we have in the last few weeks.

“We’ve been comfortable in a lot of games and been able to control them. But against a top side we were able to come through. We had to make some changes and once we did that we were good value.”

Despite Liverpool’s recent run, Rodgers says he is not looking at the league table or thinking of Europe, though he admits it is where they want to be.

“I don’t want to see where we are. It’s not important that we’re sixth. It’s just important that we continue to move,” he added.

“People talked about how we haven’t beaten anyone in the top 10, then it was the top eight and then the top six and now it’s top four. The most important thing for me is the growth in the group.

“I’m not thinking of Europe. We know where we want to be – and that’s challenging at the top end. We’re at the business end now and hopefully we can establish this is the time to win, focus on our game.”
