Pep Guardiola had nothing to declare when he flew into Barcelona on Saturday, looking for all the world like just another backpacker.

All Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants for Christmas is the former Barcelona boss to take over at Stamford Bridge next season but the Catalan won’t be hurried back into work.

Guardiola had flown home from New York to visit his Barca successor, Tito Vilanova, who left hospital on Saturday night after throat cancer surgery.

A Barcelona statement read: ‘Given the post-surgery progress, Tito Vilanova has been discharged from hospital on Saturday afternoon. The Barca coach’s operation on Thursday went as planned.’

And the Barcelona players paid tributes to their manager, wearing shirts with messages of support before their match with Real Valladolid on Saturday night.

Guardiola spent four amazingly successful years as Barcelona manager before handing over the reins to Vilanova earlier this year.
