Özil, Arsenal

Summer signing Mesut Özil needs to do more work if he is ever to live up to his £42.5 million price tag as we witnessed yesterday in the loss to Liverpool, and while the loss cannot be put squarely on his shoulders  can anyone tell me what he contributed to the game?

I am beginning to see why Real Madrid let him go, and the reason is he is inconsistent sure he can have one brilliant game and then you get half a dozen where he does nothing or as we witnessed in both the loss to Manchester City and the loss yesterday he just gives up when things are not going his way.

I think the problem here is that he does not put in the workload required in order to play in the Premiership not running or putting in the effort you see from other players like Wilshere did yesterday never giving up always chasing and looking for the ball unlike Özil who was nowhere to be seen.

In fact when Wenger did finally throw the towel in and make three substitutions Özil actually looked relieved to be coming off the pitch rather than a player who wanted to stay on and fight for his team.

While I know it is still early days as far as the German is concerned I can’t help but get the feeling that unless he steps up and starts to lead we might be witnessing another Andrei Arshavin who likes to provide the odd bit of brilliance just don’t expect to see him run for 90 minutes.

Özil will have a chance on Wednesday night to make amends for his poor performance against Liverpool and if he does not it will not just be me that is starting to lose patience with him.
