Liverpool, Benfica

Despite losing £50 million last year Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says the club is heading in the right direction and that there will be money to spend this summer.

Liverpool is currently second in the table four points behind Chelsea with ten matches to play and while they still have a chance of winning the Premiership, qualifying for the Champions League next season barring a disaster looks to be on the cards, and with that in mind Liverpool manager will be looking to strengthen the squad during the summer, especially after failing to sign Basel winger Mohamed Salah and Dnipro’s  Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Salah opted to join Chelsea with the Konoplyanka deal falling through when the Ukrainian clubs owner refused to sell.

Apparently fed up with dealing with the Ukrainian Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has now switched his attention for Benfica winger Nicola Gaitan who the club value at £16 million.

Liverpool has already sent scouts to watch the 26-year-old Argentinian play in Portugal at will watch him closely when Benfica play Tottenham next week in their Europa League last-16 match.

The price for Gaitan is about the same as Liverpool were expecting to pay for Yevhen Konoplyanka

The Argentinian was linked with a move to Manchester United a couple of seasons ago with both parties said to be in advanced talks but in the end nothing happened.

This summer though Liverpool will be in a much stronger position when trying to sign players now it looks like they will have that Champions League carrot to dangle.
