England take on Poland at Wembley on Tuesday night in an affair that needs to see England come away with a win if they hope to automatically qualify for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

After a 4-1 win against Montenegro last Friday you would expect that England will be favourites Tuesday night at Wembley you would be right with odds at 1/4 for an England victory, yet while the win on paper looks convincing against Montenegro anyone who watched the scoreless first half will tell you of their relief once England manages to have a two goal cushion.

England has a very good record against Poland and are the bookmakers overwhelming favourites to secure all three points, and it will be interesting to see manager Roy Hodgson’s approach to the match after starting three strikers against Montenegro in the form of Sturridge, Welbeck and Rooney will be a little more cautious knowing that a 1-0 win will be enough to have his England team packing their bags for South America.

This is a match England need to win in order to avoid having to fight it out for a playoff berth which could put pressure on the “Three Lions “the longer into the match without a goal.

Poland meanwhile has nothing to play except pride following their loss to Ukraine on Friday despite putting in a good first half performance. This is another reason that the bookmakers are offering such good odds on a Polish win with the belief that the only thing on the players mind now that they know they will not be going to the World Cup is just to get through the ninety minutes, and go home.

Poland will prove harder to break down than Montenegro but England go into the match having not lost to the Poles in their last 15 encounters, and despite having a dangerous striker in the form of Borussia Dortmund’s in form Robert Lewandowski I am predicting an England win and will have a cheeky little punt on Wayne Rooney to be the opening scorer where I should find in the market odds of 3/1 after the Manchester United scorer has netted six times in his last five internationals.
