Chelsea target Luke Shaw took to twitter to express his feelings over Italian chairman Nicola Cortese resigning from Southampton which has increased speculation about his future at the club.

Shaw is regarded as one of a new crop of English talent in the game and is being looked at by Chelsea as a possible long term replacement for Ashley Cole according to the website goal.com.

Cortese was a very popular figure with both manager Mauricio Pochettino and the players at St. Marys, and his departure is seen as the result of a long term disagreement with the clubs owner Katharina Liebherr.

The last time there was talk of Cortese being forced out Argentinean manager Mauricio Pochettino said he would follow him out the door also, and reports of him following up on his previous threat are now gathering pace.

18-year-old Shaw on hearing the news of Cortese posted on twitter the following message:

“Gutted with that news, but would just like to thank Nicola Cortese for everything he has done for me and the club! All the best to him!”

Regarding Cortese’s resignation Liebherr stated: “With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese.

“He [Cortese] has done a wonderful job and we very much wanted him to stay. A search has now begun for a successor.

“It is business as usual and we will ensure that the manager, team and staff at the club have all the help and support they need.”
