The Gunners hoped to bring back their record scorer, 35, on loan from New York Red Bulls as they did last January.

But Wenger said: “He is not ready and he has just come back from holiday anyway. At the moment we are not on that case.”

A deal had looked nailed on for another return after Wenger revealed Henry — who hit 228 goals in 337 games for the Gunners — had been advising fellow winger-turned-striker Theo Walcott.

But while boss Wenger has scrapped that move, he will be busy in the transfer market. He said: “I will be active, yes.

“We are looking everywhere, we’re open-minded. We want to strengthen the squad.”
