Wilshere has played just three competitive games for Arsenal since suffering an ankle injury playing for England in June 2011.

But he is selected for Wednesday’s friendly in Sweden. Gunners boss Wenger had an awkward phone conversation with Three Lions boss Hodgson when told the news.

Wenger said: “I wouldn’t like to come out on my feelings on that as at the moment, they’re not very positive.

“I saw it coming. That’s all I can say. Anyway, I have no choice. If they call him up, they call him up.

“First of all, he’s not been injured with Arsenal, he has been injured with England.

“I have good relations with Roy. We spoke about the situation, he knows my feelings and I know his feeling.

“So we cut a good compromise. Roy wants him in the group to connect the game with the players.”

The compromise is that Wilshere will play 45 minutes in Sweden.

He is suspended for tomorrow’s club match with Fulham after his sending off at Manchester United.

But Wenger is also angry with the friendly being on Wednesday and not Tuesday — as Arsenal then have a Saturday lunchtime clash with Spurs.

Wenger was speaking at the opening of the Arsenal Lung Function Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He added: “Basically there are a lot of politics behind these games.

“When you see some teams travelling during that period, you think it is more to pay back some corporation rather than preparing a team.”
