With a deal between Liverpool and Chelsea for Daniel Sturridge still not finalised as negotiations have stalled over agent fees, reports suggest that the Reds could be looking at PSG forward Kevin Gameiro as an alternative. The French forward was previously a target for Spanish side Valencia, but with their interest cooling, Liverpool are said to be considering their own move for his services. talkSPORT pit Gameiro and Sturridge head-to-head…

What’s the latest?

Sturridge

Negotiations between Liverpool and Chelsea over Daniel Sturridge gathered pace earlier this week, with a £12m fee agreed between the clubs. The Reds have so far been unable to meet the demands of his agent, however, who is asking for a percentage of any fee should he be sold on in the future, and that appears to have left the deal hanging in the balance.

Gameiro

PSG and Valencia were believed to be in negotiations over Kevin Gameiro last summer, but the deal fell through before it could materialise, leaving the wantaway striker to warm the bench in Paris once more. Though he has only started three games this season, Gameiro is PSG’s second top goal scorer with four strikes, and that appears to have convinced Liverpool that he would be a good alternative to Sturridge. The Reds may face competition from no less than German champions Borussia Dortmund however.

How do they compare?

Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge has had to put up with playing out wide for much of his Chelsea career, but the versatile forward insists that the traditional centre-forward role is his best position, and his strong performances in that area of the field at Bolton support his argument, with the Englishman scoring eight goals in 12 games during his loan spell.

Gameiro

Unlike Sturridge, Kevin Gameiro isn’t capable of playing in a wide position, so should he come to Liverpool he would probably play in place of Luis Suarez to allow the star striker to rest, with Brendan Rodgers unlikely to move the Uruguayan out wide to accommodate the Frenchman. Gameiro has a decent turn of pace, but his strongest characteristic is his finishing ability, something that Liverpool desperately need to add in order to take pressure off the shoulders of Suarez.

What’s being said?

“The squad has been ultra-thin right the way through. There will be some money available. There have been a million names linked to the club and the brutal honesty of it is that ninety nine per cent of those we haven’t been thinking about.” Brendan Rodgers speaking exclusively to talkSPORT on Liverpool’s January transfer activity.
