WAYNE ROONEY admits England were handed another painful lesson in Montenegro.

But he is confident his Three Lions will still reach the World Cup finals.

The Manchester United star, who scored the opener in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw in Podgorica, revealed his frustration at his team throwing away a lead — just as they did in Poland five months ago.

He said: “We still have a great chance of qualification.

“It was a lesson for us in the second half and we need to learn how to see out these games better.

“You can’t regret anything. It’s just the way the game’s gone and we have to accept it.

“A point was probably a fair result though we’re disappointed we didn’t get three.

“But credit to Montenegro, they came back, had a go and put us under a lot of pressure, especially off the set-pieces.”

Rooney delivered a decent performance on his return to the ground where he was sent off in October 2011. While he scored in the sixth minute, he also hit the post in the third minute with a stunning lob.

And England skipper Steven Gerrard hailed the striker’s disciplined performance.

Midfielder Gerrard said: “I thought his behaviour was magnificent. He had been on the agenda all week with people wondering how he was going to behave.

“I thought he handled himself magnificently and got us that important goal. The lads know if we can create the service for Wayne, he will score goals.”
