Mario Gotze has stressed that Germany will go to World Cup 2014 with the intention to win it if they manage to secure qualification for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
The Mannschaft have not won a major tournament since Euro 1996, while their last World Cup success was back in 1990, and the Borussia Dortmund youngster is desperate to help his nation win silverware again.
“The tournament is still a year away, which is why it’s a good idea for us to just take each game as it comes. We need to qualify for the finals first,” Gotze told the official Fifa website.
“However, we know we’re a good team and we have big ambitions. If we go to a tournament, we want to win it.”
The 20-year-old then went on to discuss Dortmund’s performances so far this season, and stressed that they have no reason to be unhappy, despite being on the verge of surrendering their Bundesliga crown.
“I don’t think we could actually have played any better in the Champions League. We were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal after losing to Bayern, but that’s football,” he said.
“In the Bundesliga we’re well on course to qualify for the Champions League again. The fact we’re so far off top spot is annoying, but I have to admit that Bayern have been very good this season while we’ve dropped too many points.”
Dortmund currently sit second in the Bundesliga table, trailing Bayern by 20 points.
