Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck insists the competition from this summer’s Old Trafford new-boys is “healthy”
Danny Welbeck believes increased competition for places at Manchester United can only improve the Red Devils’ performances this season.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been busy in the transfer market over the summer, completing deals for Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell in July before landing Robin van Persie from Arsenal, with Pablo Henriquez and left-back Alexander Buttner also arriving last month.
“It is really healthy competition,” Welbeck said. “We have a wide variety of strikers to choose from and that creates a good selection problem for the manager. It will have a good effect on the team.”
The 21-year-old was part of Roy Hodgson’s England squad that reached the Euro 2012 quarter-finals before losing to Italy on penalties, and Welbeck feels he is finally returning to full fitness after a hectic summer.
“It takes a while to get your fitness up,” he added. “I have had a couple of games. I am looking forward to pushing on now and getting 90 minutes under my belt,” he added.
United lost their opening Premier League game 1-0 to Everton before beating Fulham 3-2 at Old Trafford last weekend.
Next up for the Red Devils is a tricky trip to Southampton on Sunday afternoon – and Welbeck has warned that United must approach the game in the right manner.
“I have watched both their games so far,” Welbeck said. “They have played some really good football and have a few players to watch out for. Adam Lallana in particular is excellent.
“But the most important thing is to concentrate on our own team and make sure we play the right way.”
