Manchester City are preparing a £46million bid to rival Chelsea’s offer for Atletico Madrid striker Falcao.

Colombian hitman Falcao, 26, has scored 11 goals in just seven appearances this season and has quickly become Europe’s most sought-after striker.

Chelsea are prepared to meet the release clause of the player who netted a hat-trick against them in the European Super Cup, but City scout Carlo Cancellieri has revealed that boss Roberto Mancini is also interested in the former Porto man.

When discussing City’s striking options Cancellieri significantly did not mention wantaway Bosnia Edin Dzeko, while he played down talks of a move for Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic.

‘He [Jovetic] is an interesting player, he has quality. But in attack City are already good, we’re happy with Tevez, Aguero and Balotelli,’ Cancellieri told tuttomercatoweb.com.

‘Moreover, I believe that our players are better than Jovetic. He is a very good player, but he is not one who could make a difference such as Falcao.

‘I spoke about him in recent days with Mancini. If we were to take a player in January, we should take Falcao. He is an important player, the only one who could make us take the leap.’

Although City have more financial clout than Chelsea, Blues owner Roman Abramovich is determined to add Falcao to his strikeforce and is unlikely to give up his quest without a fight.
