Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is keen to join Arsenal for a cut price £6million in January – but only now Robin van Persie has left, according to reports.

The Holland striker dreams of playing at The Emirates, but feared that would never happen as long as Van Persie was there.

Huntelaar and Van Persie are big rivals in the Dutch national team and have had a volatile relationship behind the scenes.

But with Van Persie having left Arsenal for Manchester United and Huntelaar’s contract at Schalke expiring at the end of the season, The Sunday Mirror claim the door is now open for the man who was the Bundesliga’s top-scorer with 29 goals last season.

Schalke have confirmed that scouts from Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton, have attended their last few games.

Ex-Liverpool striker Erik Meyer, who has the same agent (Arnold Oosterveer) as Huntelaar, told The Sunday Mirror: ‘According to the information I have, Huntelaar will be gone in the winter. Arsenal are the favourites.’
