In what the British tabloid Daily Star calls an exclusive! Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is pulling out all the stops to sign Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa this January.

The Gunners have always thought to be looking for a striker this winter, but the need has been made more urgent now following the injury to Nicklas Bendtner during the 2-0 win over Cardiff city in which the Danish international sprained his ankle meaning he will be out for at least six weeks.

First choice striker and leading goal scorer Oliver Giroud is also missing due to an ankle injury making the need for a new striker a top priority.

The Brazilian born Costa who plays internationally for Spain has a £32 million buyout clause in his contract which means it would be a huge amount of money to lay out following the £42.5 million signing of Mesut Özil in the summer.

So far this season the red-hot Costa has scored 19 goals in 17 appearances for Atletico Madrid helping them to go joint top of La Liga with Barcelona.

Chelsea is also interested in the 25-year-old Costa, but Jose Mourinho maintains he will not sign a new striker during the winter transfer window.
