Arsenal, Liverpool

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is certain that the Gunners know how to alleviate the threat posed by Liverpool’s strike force of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge who have between them scored 16 goals so far this season helping to put Liverpool second in the Premiership behind Arsenal.

Even though he is unlikely to feature in the match after sliding down manager Arsene Wengers pecking order the Belgium international Vermaelen is sure that Arsenal will know what to do in order to prevent Liverpool’s deadly double from scoring.

“We know them from the past. We played a lot against Luis Suarez already, and of course I know him from my time in Ajax,” said Vermaelen.

“Sturridge we played against last season. We know them both, they are playing well and quite dangerous. But now we need to keep going like we did the last couple of weeks.2

Vermaelen also insists that their loss to Chelsea in the Capital One Cup will have no effect after Wenger rested key players making eight changes to the team that beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at the weekend.

“We’ve had a lot of big games and a defeat shouldn’t take our confidence away,” he said.

“We need to build on the results we had previously. We have won more games than we lost.

“It’s disappointing but we have a big game on Saturday and I am quite confident we can win that game.

“It’s really important to respond quickly. It’s good the game is on Saturday, and we can respond to the defeat.

“We are top of the league. We should have a lot of confidence to beat Liverpool.”
