Arsenal is currently relying on the talents of lone striker Oliver Giroud, and could see their title ambitions derailed if the French international should become injured.

These fears rose to the surface on Tuesday night following Nicklas Bendtner’s shocking performance against a second string Chelsea team during their 0-2 loss at home on Tuesday night in the Capital One Cup.

Former striker Alan Smith is telling fellow Gooners not to expect any new faces in January saying: “I don’t know who’s out there,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “He [Wenger] has got the money to spend if the right player was available, there’s no doubt about that.

“We know he was after a striker [in the summer] and targeted Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain. They were chasing them all, but it’s really difficult to get the right people.

“If they’re still in the Champions League you want someone who qualifies for that.

“It will be in the summer [when they buy]. He has a lot of money to spend and, if they have a good season and remain in that top four, they will be able to attract some good players.”
