Manchester United has raced into pole position in their desire to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez after La Liga side Valencia let it be known that they cannot meet the Portuguese clubs valuation of their player.

The 28-year-old Argentinian international has been in fine form for Benfica this season helping them to lead the Primeira Liga.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is known to be a long-time admirer of the central midfielder and would love to have him move to Old Trafford.

According to Superdeporte, United are now the lead to sign Perez next summer after Valencia balked at the £25 million Benfica were asking.

Currently everyone has assumed that it would be AS Roma player Kevin Strootman that would be arriving at Old Trafford yet new reports from sources close to the United boss suggest that van Gaal is hesitant to take a gamble on Strootman given his history of injury problems, which if the case sends Perez to the top of the Dutchman’s wish list.
