Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is talking up a possible move to sign Liverpool’s unsettled Danish international defender Daniel Agger following the Gunners impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester City in yesterday’s Community Shield at Wembley.

Despite the win it is obvious that Arsenal is short in the centre-back department after club captain Thomas Vermaelen left to join Barcelona in a deal thought to be worth £15million, prompting speculation that he is set to make a bid for Daniel Agger.

Agger should he remain at Liverpool looks set to spend most of the season on the side-lines after Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers went out and signed Southampton’s Dejan Lovren and with both Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho fighting for a place Agger would like to leave Anfield before the transfer window closes in three weeks’ time.

While talking about Vermaelen’s move to Spain, Wenger hinted that he is ready to bring Agger to the Emirates.

He said: “Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year – I am grateful for him and I wish him very well.

“If I can find another centre-back I will do it. You make your position with your performances.”
