After having been dropped for yesterday’s 2-0 win over Everton Per Mertesacker’s future at Arsenal looks dim to say the least, after new signing Gabriel Paulista took his place and put in a fine defensive performance that impressed the critics and had the Daily Star reporting that should he continue to improve, manager Arsene Wenger will sell the German international in the summer.

The big German was dropped for the Everton game after a massive mistake midweek allowed Monaco to score their second goal in the 3-1 defeat of Arsenal in the first-leg of their last-16 Champions League match at the Emirates midweek.

Mertesacker is now 30-years-old and it is obvious to all watching that he no longer has the legs to keep up with younger strikers as was evident from the gaff against Monaco, and with Arsenal’s policy of only offering players over the age of 29 one-year extensions, it is quite plausible that Mertesacker has already been considering his future with the club.
