Ozil, 23, has faced a tough time at the beginning of this season, with Luka Modric’s arrival at the Bernabeu casting doubt on his future at the club.

But the Germany international insists he doesn’t see it that way and is thriving on the competition the former Tottenham playmaker has added to the squad.

“I knew there would always be competition when I signed for Real,” Ozil told kicker. “My target is to concentrate on my task, to concentrate on my performance. I know what I am capable of, and have shown it on several occasions. In the end it’s up to the coach, who starts. I get along great with Luka Modric, he is a super guy and player.

“The coach knows what I am capable of. And I am thankful he’s put confidence in me. It’s like that in Spain. I’ve been here for three years now, and know the media. You have to cope with that, even if it’s over the top at times.”

And despite reports of interest from Premier League sides, Ozil underlined his commitment to Madrid and their supporters, adding: “I live in Madrid. And when I take a walk – the fans are crazy. It’s only Real Madrid.

“The fans are unbelievable. Naturally, I’m pleased with that and it makes me proud. Most of all when we play at the Bernabeu, the atmosphere there is unbelievable. That’s unique!”

Ahead of Germany’s World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden, Ozil is confident of two important victories, even though he knows he isn’t assured of his place in the team.

“There is competition everywhere, everbody wants to play. But I don’t decide who’s playing or not,” he said. “We want to win both games. We will prepare for it and give all we can. Ireland are powerful, on top of the atmosphere in Dublin will be special. The fans will push their team. But if we can bring our game through, we will win both matches.”
