Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is so desperate to take over at Manchester United should they sack Louis van Gaal that he is willing to take a massive £16 million pay cut.

Manchester United is currently on a bad run of six games without a win that has seen the Red Devils plunge down the Premier League and crash out of this seasons Champions League competition following a 3-2 away loss to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Should Dutch manager Louis van Gaal get fired, Mourinho has already made it known that he would be willing to accept a four-year contract worth £6 million per-season if he were to replace the 64-year-old van Gaal.

This would be in line with the current deal Louis van Gaal already has at Old Trafford according to the Daily Star who also claims that the Portuguese manager is desperate to take over one of the world’s biggest clubs.

A source said: “Jose is making no secret of how keen he is to take charge of United if the job becomes available.

“It is not about the money. Managing United has always been one of his ambitions because of the prestige and history associated with the club.

“He knows it would be a huge challenge, but he loves working in English football and would take a wage cut if it meant getting the chance to make United great again.”

With United’s season unravelling at a hectic pace, the pressure is on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to act fast and make a decision either to stick with what they have, fire van Gaal and put Giggs in charge or bring Mourinho in, and allow Giggs along with LVG to leave to let Mourinho bring in his own backroom staff.

The newspaper also claims that former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been drafted in to provide guidance as to what steps United should take, and if that is in fact true you can bet that Mourinho has been on the phone with his old wine drinking buddy to put his case forward for the job should it become available.
