According to sources at Sky Manchester United is very close to completing a £21.5 million deal for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The 24-year-old will be out of contract at the end of next season, and the German giants are afraid they will lose him for nothing if they do not sell now, as was the case with striker Robert Lewandowski who joined Bayern Munich when his contact at Dortmund expired.

The German international was also linked with a move to Manchester City and Arsenal, but sources say it is United who is now close to wrapping up a deal for the midfielder.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has said that he was in the market for a quality midfielder this summer and having a fine passing eye along with the ability to tackle back Gundogan certainly fits the bill.
