Manchester United is set to smash the British transfer fee record by offering to pay Paris Saint-Germain £56 million for Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani.

Cavani is thought to be one of the names on a list of players given to United vice-chairman Ed Woodward by new manager Louis van Gaal to sign this summer while he is still managing the Netherlands before moving to Old Trafford after the World Cup.

Despite PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi saying that Cavani would not be leaving the club there is frustration on the part of Cavani having to be played wide by manager Laurent Blanc who plays Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the central striker.

PSG broke their club transfer record when they brought Cavani to the Parc des Princes from Napoli in a deal valued at £54 million.

United is well aware that signing Cavani will smash the British transfer fee record currently held by Chelsea who paid £50 million to Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.

United is confident that they can get Cavani but just in case have a back-up plan that involves Porto striker Jackson Martinez who is thought to be a possible Arsenal target as the Gunners also look for a world class striker.
