In what would appear to be a very bizarre arrangement Manchester United has agreed to sign attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica for £28.7 million.

The strange thing about this deal is that it will only happen should United sell Angel Di Maria.

If not, presumably Di Maria’s Argentinian teammate remains in Portugal for next season.

This surly suggests that Di Maria is up for sale and that United manager Louis van Gaal wants to have all his bases covered should a sale take place, and given the fact Gaitan’s release clause is £25.2 million United is willing to pay more just to ensure the verbal agreement they have for the 27-year-old remains in place.
