Manchester United midfield target Kevin Strootman is on his way home from Rome in order to sort out his knee, following a recurrence to the injury he suffered last year.

The 24-year-old Dutchman limped off the field just 34 minutes into the game with Fiorentina last weekend in a match that finished 1-1 and sees Strootman’s team now slip seven-points behind Serie A leaders Juventus.

The 24-year-old has only started four matches this season for Roma, and another injury to the one that had him miss last summer’s World Cup could be enough to end his dream of linking up with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

LVG looked on Strootman as the man to sort out United’s midfield after still not correctly balancing the team despite spending £150 million on new players.

United must now think long and hard before spending the kind of money Roma would ask for a player whose career may now be cut short.
