Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has for the second season in a row turned down the chance to join West Ham with the Daily Mirror running a story this morning that suggests the Belgium international will only entertain playing for a club that will be involved in either the Champions or Europa League.

The 21-year-old striker has been on loan for the past two seasons first at West Brom and then at Everton where he managed 15 goals for the Toffee’s.

Lukaku remains unconvinced that his future lies with Chelsea and it certainly looks up in the air this summer also with the imminent arrival of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.

German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs thinks that Chelsea might be prepared to sell Lukaku to a club they do not consider to be a rival, and the fact that Wolfsburg are in the Europa League could appeal to the young Belgium.

Allofs said: “If the player is getting cheaper, maybe this affair is picking up pace.

“But even then we won’t be the only club chasing the player’s signature. Actually we are looking at top-class strikers and we do not have any pressure. We are patiently waiting for the right moment.

“There will be some movement in all of this after the World Cup.”

Lukaku meanwhile plays his first World Cup match for Belgium against Algeria in Brazil on Tuesday.
