First it was Roberto Firmino that the Reds snatched from the grasp of Manchester United, and now they plan to go after Benfica attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is a big fan of the 27-year-old Argentinian international and has not given up hope of signing him despite his agent Jose Irribaren claiming a deal had already been agreed with Manchester United.

“Everything is possible, there is a deal with Manchester United,” Irrabaren said.

“The will of the player is that everything goes well.

“We are waiting for a response from the vice president, which is why I cannot say much more.”

Gaitan’s release clause at Benfica is £25 million which Liverpool is prepared to pay, and should this deal go through it would certainly signal the fact that Raheem Sterling was busy packing and that Liverpool intended to make up for their poor 2014/2015 season.
