Liverpool appears a step closer to securing the transfer of Asier Illarramendi, as Real Madrid are reportedly lining up his replacement in the form of Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, according to the Daily Mail.

Should the 23-year-old who shined for Portugal in this summer’s U-21 European Championships actually join Real Madrid, it would almost force 25-year-old Illarramendi to look elsewhere for first team football.

Saying this however there is a new sheriff in town called Rafa Benitez, who will take a good long-hard look at his squad before he allows anyone to leave, but with Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers said to be willing to pay £16 million for the midfielder it may make Benitez consider letting the Spanish international leave.
