Despite taking the extraordinary step of saying he was ready to get back to work after having just been sacked by Chelsea, Jose Mourinho turned down the chance to take over Serie A side AS Roma.

The former Blues boss released a statement through his agents at Creative Artists Sports and Polaris Sports, stating “he will not be taking a sabbatical” with the London Independent saying that Roma had already made him an offer.

The newspaper claims the 52-year-old Portuguese manager turned down the job in Italy because he wants to take over from under pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman’s team lost 2-1 at home yesterday to lowly Norwich adding pressure on the already unpopular with the fans van Gaal for his style of possession based football.

Meanwhile over at Stamford Bridge the still popular with the fans manager Jose Mourinho had his name sung every time the Blues scored a goal in their 3-1 win over Sunderland, with no one taking notice of newly appointed interim manager Guus Hiddink.
