Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels is on his way out of Germany following Dortmund’s dramatic collapse in the Bundesliga and is expected to join a Premiership club this January according to reports in Germany carried by the Daily Star.

Arsenal and Manchester United have both been linked with the World Cup winner who cannot decide which team he wants to join.

LVG wants Hummels to help shore up his weakened defence and only yesterday criticised it for being too small.

The Dutchman spent £150 million last summer, but did not sign a centre-back, and with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all suffering injuries was forced to use youth players.

Arsenal meanwhile are even worse off with just Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the club after manager Arsene Wenger did not replace Thomas Vermaelen after he was sold to Barcelona.

The German club will expect to receive offers in the region of £40 million for Hummels, but with their struggles sitting second from bottom in the relegation zone they may have to accept less.

Hummels recently spoke of the clubs plight saying: “We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away. It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”
