We all know that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is a natural striker, and only assume that manager Louis van Gaal is playing him out of position to accommodate the fact he has two highly paid strikers besides Rooney in his squad.

The England international returned to his more natural position against Swansea City last weekend, and now in the hope that the Dutchman might see some sense and leave Rooney where he belongs former teammate Gary Neville has said that he hopes LVG will now leave him upfront to spearhead the Red Devils attack.

“I don’t think midfield is Wayne Rooney’s best position,” United legend Neville told Drivetime.

“I think what happened at Man United earlier on in the season was he was put there out of necessity because of injuries and he’s ended up staying there.

“Now he seems to have gone back [to being a forward] and I certainly think he’s better up top.”
