He’s broken a metatarsal in his right foot. The injury happened in a Brazil training session in Poland today. Team doctors examined him in hospital and confirmed the extent of the damage.
The so-called ‘FIFA virus’ has proved very costly indeed for Real Madrid. Marcelo broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during a Brazil training session today and will be out of action for the next three months. Fabio Coentrao also picked up an injury to his adductor muscles in the 19th minute of Portugal’s game against Russia, and will definitely miss Tuesday’s encounter with Northern Ireland.

Marcelo appeared to have twisted his right ankle earlier today and limped off the training pitch hardly able to bring his foot to the ground. He was taken to a nearby hospital where tests revealed the extent of the injury, which will be in line with the worst fears of ‘madridistas’.

Brazil were in the Polish city of Wroclaw, where they’re to play a friendly against Japan next Tuesday. After he learnt of the nature of his injury, the player was given permission to return to Madrid and the hands of his club’s medical staff.

“I’ll be back soon. There’s still a lot of time until the Confederations Cup in 2013 and I hope to be there”, he said
