Arsenal has been handed a “Christmas Miracle” according to Swiss outlet Aargauer Zeitung after agreeing a fee with Basel for Egyptian international defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League to Leicester City, and could go top with a win over Southampton at St Mary’s on Boxing Day.

Injuries to both Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, that could see the pair out until at least March have forced manager Arsene Wenger into singing a defensive midfielder this January.

Elneny may not be every Arsenal fans first choice for the vacant position, but given the fact that bigger names were either overpriced or not available, Wenger may have made a shrewd move bringing the 23-year-old on board.

Elneny has won three Swiss league titles with Basel, while also being one of their standout players during this seasons Europa League competition as you can see in the video below.
