Chelsea has just signed a £40 million per-year shirt sponsorship deal with Japanese tyre company Yokohama Rubber Company.

The new five-year deal eclipses the current £18 million per-year that the club was getting from Korean electronics company Samsung, who has been the clubs shirt sponsor since 2006.

The deal marks the second biggest pay-out for an English club, and is £10 million per-year less than the deal Manchester United did with American automobile manufacturer Chevrolet.

The current Premiership leaders are one of the most recognised sporting brands in the world with an estimated 500 million fans, and were last season the most watched English football club with a total of 31,000 broadcast hours.

“Chelsea and Yokohama are a perfect fit. Both are global organisations with a focus on performance and innovation, as well as having huge ambition and an unwavering culture of success,” Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said on the club’s website.

The Yokohama Rubber Company is a globally known company that employs more than 20,000 in 120 countries.
