Chelsea has decided they too want to sign Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne, and are prepared to battle it out with United for the England right-back.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has Cline on his list of summer targets he wants to bring into the club as he has a major clear-out of the players he does not see as a part of the team he wants to build at Old Trafford.

He will now face stiff opposition from Chelsea for Clyne after the West London has had scouts out watching the 23-year-old this season.

Jose Mourinho has earmarked the £15 million rated defender as an ideal candidate to help boost the Blues list of home grown players.

Clyne joined Southampton in 2012, and while the club wants him to stay on he is yet to sign a new contract with them as he eyes a summer move to a bigger club.
