Chelsea sent scouts to Italy last weekend to watch Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi and were not surprised to see other European scouts there including some from Merseyside club Liverpool.

Manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring in at least one striker next summer to replace Didier Drogba who is expected to move into a coaching role at the club.

The 21-year old Argentinian did not disappoint either scoring twice in the 3-1 win over Palermo, but did not celebrate due to his run in with the fans a week earlier after Inters 3-1 loss away to Sassuolo.

When he and Fredy Guarín went over to the travelling fans to thank them for their support by throwing their jerseys into the crowd the Inter fans responded by throwing the jerseys back at the players leading the young Argentinian to hurl abuse calling them “pieces of shit … you are all pieces of shit” he said.

The 21-year-old’s contract runs until 2018, but he is still one of the lowest players at the club earning just £11,000 per-week plus bonuses, and while Inter may be willing to increase his wage it will not come close to what Chelsea would be willing to pay.

So far this season the Argentinian has scored 13 goals in 22 Serie A matches, and is exactly the back-up for Diego Costa Chelsea boss Mourinho is looking for.
