Chelsea’s attempt to sign Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis could run into trouble with the Spanish tax authorities according to the Daily Star.

Spanish sports newspaper AS says there are some doubts as to what Chelsea would have to pay in taxes for them to be able to sign the Brazilian defender.

The release clause in the 28-year-olds contract went up from £19.5m to £24.5m when he signed his latest contract with the Madrid club.

Complications within the Spanish tax system means that Chelsea may have to come up with a figure close to £37 million in order to sign him.

Filipe Luis had been pencilled in as the replacement for Ashley Cole but if the tax people decide Chelsea must pay £37 million rather than the £24 million they had expected the deal will be off.

Meanwhile Atletico boss Diego Simeone will be happy to see the Brazilian stay at the Vicente Calderon as Atletico prepare to defend their La Liga title.
