BORUSSIA DORTMUND beat Real Madrid to leave Manchester City staring at an early Champions League exit.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fifth goal in three European games after Dortmund had taken the lead.

But the Germans grabbed the win courtesy of Marcel Schmelzer.

Madrid dominated the opening half but it was Dortmund who scored first when Robert Lewandowski fired home after 36 minutes.

Their advantage was short-lived, though, and Ronaldo levelled two minutes later by chipping over the keeper.

The Germans regained their lead just after the hour when Schmelzer smashed the ball in from the edge of the box.

Real had nothing else to offer as they lost for the first time in the competition.

Dortmund now sit top of Group D, one point ahead of Real. City are yet to win in three games.
