BOSS Andre Villas-Boas was in despair after Tottenham suffered more late-goal hell.

Everton nicked the points with goals after 90 and 92 minutes. Spurs would be top if matches ended after 80.

AVB said: “It is a difficult blow to take. There are so many different reasons why we concede late and it is not easy to explain because it comes from different situations.”

Clint Dempsey gave Spurs the lead on 76 minutes but ex-Spurs star Steven Pienaar equalised three seconds from the end of normal time.

Then, with 92 minutes gone, Nikica Jelavic smashed the winner as Everton leapt above Spurs into fourth.

Incredibly, if Premier League games had ended 10 minutes earlier, AVB’s men would be top of the pile this season.

The Tottenham chief moaned: “It has been an adventure so far this season but if we didn’t have so many results go against us late on we would be first in the league.

“It is something we are aware of and need to improve on, seeing off games.

“I don’t think it is mental because, before they scored, it was our best period for some time.”

Everton boss David Moyes was delighted with his side’s gritty fightback.

He said: “It is too early to talk about Europe but the position doesn’t shame Everton because the team have been playing that well.

“It feels good today but we have got to make sure we maintain that.

“If Everton hadn’t won we would have been wondering how not.

“I thought we played terrifically well especially in the first half.”
