Despite all the controversy surrounding Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea’s possible summer move to Real Madrid, the Spaniard remains adamant that he was never prepared to let his contract run down according to a report in the Manchester Evening News.

The 24-year-old Spanish international could have let his contract expire and join Real Madrid next summer as a free agent, but told his Old Trafford teammates that it was never an option for him to do that.

Long before his proposed £29 million move to the Spanish capital fell through on deadline day, De Gea discussed with other members of the team his desire to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, rather than wait 10 months before leaving, which he did signing a new deal that will keep him at the Northwest giants until 2019 with a further one-year option should he decide to take it.
