Turkey is no stranger to soccer violence with some of the game’s most ardent supporters to be found following Turkeys Super Liga clubs.

The violent side of the game in Turkey raised its ugly head again last night when during a match in Trabzon between local side Trabzonspor and Istanbul’s Fenerbahce the referee had to abandon the match when objects thrown from the crowd began raining down on the pitch.

Fenerbahce were leading the match 0-1 thanks to a first half goal from Emmanuel Emenike when suddenly the home crowd started to throw a variety of missiles at the visiting team.

The match was initially stopped for 28-minutes and then during the time added on for the stoppage the referee had to abandon the match due to safety concerns.

The two clubs have been fierce rivals since the 2011-2012 season when Fenerbahce produced some incredible results to beat their Black Sea rival to win the league on goal difference.

The subsequent investigation into the Istanbul sides incredible run of results led to Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim being given a prison sentence for match fixing.

After the match was abandoned the Trabzonspor fans continued battling with the police on the streets outside the ground.
