Despite knowing that he was not Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal’s first choice for centre-back, Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi is eager to prove the Dutchman wrong, and to show why he belongs at Old Trafford.

Valencia for their part are holing out on letting the Argentinian international leave until either United or another club meets the 27-year-olds £35 million buyout clause.

The tough-tackling defender is currently on international duty with Argentina, as they compete in this summer’s Copa America in Chile, but has told friends that he is “desperate” to move to Old Trafford.

For their part Manchester United is a bit reluctant to spend such a large amount of money on a player LVG does not consider to be his number one choice, but with it looking as though Mats Hummels will remain at Borussia Dortmund he may not have a choice.
