Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has decided to send Colombian striker Radamel Falcao back to Monaco once his season long loan is up despite the Northwest club having the first option to sign him.

United have now switched their focus to Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani with the Daily Star reporting that van Gaal wants to sign the 27-year-old in what could be a Premiership record deal.

A source at the club said: “Edinson Cavani has been targeted as the big-name striker the club wants and United are confident of pulling it off.

“He has not settled in Paris and is looking for a new challenge at another big club, so United fit the bill.”

The clubs principle owners the Glazer family held talks with van Gaal yesterday and have apparently signed off on the deal with the stipulation that United must finish in the top four.

Cavani moved to PSG from Napoli in 2013 for £55 million where he has had to play out of position in Laurent Blanc’s team with the French manager preferring to play Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Cavani’s preferred spot.

The news from France is that the Ligue 1 champions would be willing to sell Cavani as it helps them comply with the FFP rules while at the same time getting one of their top wage earners off the books.
