Liverpool to push for a top-four finish if they can win at Southampton

Christian Benteke is already thinking of leaving Liverpool at the end of the season according former Arsenal star Paul Merson. According to Merson, the Belgian can’t wait enough for the season to end so he can leave Anfield.

Benteke had criticised manager Jurgen Klopp during the international break for continually benching him. This criticism Merson believes is all geared towards the Belgian leaving Liverpool this summer

“I think he just cannot wait for the season to finish,” Merson told the Soccer Saturday programme. “It’s one of those situations where he knows he won’t be there next season and his mind now is on the Euros.

“I didn’t like [Klopp’s criticism]. I think it’s disrespectful and there’s no need. The manager afterward will have probably sat down and thought ‘bad move’.”

Football insider had revealed last month that West Ham have identified Benteke as a key summer target. However, it is said that Co-owner David Sullivan claims Benteke’s wage demands may be a problem for the Hammers.

Liverpool made Benteke their second more expensive signing behind Luis Suarez when they paid Aston Villa £32.5million to sign him last July. Unfortunately for Liverpool, they can not expect to make any profit on their investment as there is not a single club in Europe who will be willing to pay £32.5million or more for Benteke.

Unless the Reds are lucky enough to find a Chinese club who would be interested in signing the Belgian, they can forget recouping all of the money spent on Benteke Back. Everyone knew it was a stupid move in the first place anyway. He is a good player, but not one that deserves a £32.5million price tag.
