Former Gunners Invincible Ray Parlour believes that Arsene Wenger must make Southampton defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin the clubs number one target this summer.

Following Arsenal’s exit from the Champions League last night and the fact they are seven points behind league leaders Chelsea, the only real chance Arsenal now has of winning something this season is the FA Cup.

French international Schneiderlin has long been linked with a move to the Emirates with even talk of a verbal agreement being in place that will see him join the Gunners during the summer.

Parlour a former favourite at Highbury insists that if Arsenal is to have any chance of competing for the Premiership next summer they must sign Schneiderlin and another top quality player.

“Arsenal need to get Morgan Schneiderlin if he’s available in the summer,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.

“He would be perfect. He’s a little bit like Gilberto Silva when he was at Arsenal. He can sit back into the back four and, when it’s wide, he can be another centre half. That’s so good if you can do that.

“He’s so comfortable on the ball and someone like him would be a great addition.

“There has to be big investment at Arsenal this summer,” he added. “The Premier League is more important than the Champions League.

“In Europe, sometimes, you need a bit of luck along the way but the league doesn’t lie. The most consistent team always win it, that’s what they’ve got to look at.

“They need to be challenging Chelsea and Man City, along with Liverpool and Manchester United next season.

“He’s got to go and buy two top class players and really add to the squad. Then maybe they can challenge for the league title next season.”
