Dutch striker Robin van Persie still has close to 18-months to run on his current deal with the Red Devils after having arrived from Arsenal in the summer of 2012.

Back in March he said that he would like to remain at Old Trafford longer, but so far now new deal has been offered to the 31-year-old.

He said: “It is not up to me. For the moment I am staying here for 18-months. That is it really. I can’t look into the future. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We shall have to wait and see.”

Van Persie has averaged one goal every two games for United, but this season has dropped off in form only scoring eight times in 21 games, a tally he agrees is not god enough.

“Obviously we are not scoring enough goals, including me,” the 31-year-old said at a corporate event at Old Trafford on Monday. “Everyone feels responsible. I do, definitely.

This year I have played something like 20 games and I have scored eight goals.

“I am not happy with that. I want to score more. I will do everything, every day in training and during the games I will keep doing what I have been doing for the last 10 years to make those goals. It makes so many people happy, including me.”

United is currently fourth in the Premiership under Louis van Gaal, with the new boss having to defend his style in recent weeks after having come under criticism from certain quarters.

Van Persie however is well used to working with the Dutchman after their time together in the national team and defends his methods saying that the players believe in him.

“The players have been working with him only four or six months, everyone believes in themselves, our team-mates and our staff. We are confident it will change.

“Him and his coaching staff and we as players are trying everything we can to win games, not only win games but win them in a nice way as well.”
