Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told his players that it is time to start winning silverware again as the Redmen travel to Stamford Bridge today to take on Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in their semi-final Capital One Cup first-leg match.

Liverpool is yet to win any trophies under Rodgers with their last success coming under Kenny Dalglish who won the same competition back in 2012.

Rodgers wants the team to taste success once more and feels that winning the Capital One Cup will be the perfect first course.

He said: “I think it is that taste of success that hopefully pushes them on.

“We have worked really hard in the majority of the two-and-a-half years [under Rodgers], but we are here to win and as I said, we are club that is synonymous with winning trophies.

“We want to get that back again and hopefully we can do that this season.”

Rodgers is hoping that Capital One Cup success could spark a run for a Champions League place, as well as boding well for the title next season.

He said: “Over the last 10 years they have shown once you win the first one, you can go on and sustain it.

“They will tell you that first trophy was the most important. We know if you want to win the competition you have to beat the best teams.”

Despite having worked under Mourinho for three years at the Chelsea academy Rodgers admits his relationship with the Portuguese manager has changed now that they are competing for the same trophies.

“Certainly the respect hasn’t dropped or been lost and he is a good man.”
