Ref made too many mistakes in Arsenal v Liverpool Cup tie

Yorkshire born referee Howard Webb is normally as good as it gets when deciding who you would want to referee a top game with the 42-year-old  having been in Charge of the World Cup final between Spain and Holland in South Africa in 2010, and will be called upon this summer to help adjudicate the finals in Brazil.

Yet how the experienced referee could have got it so wrong yesterday is anybody’s guess, and it was not just the Liverpool fans who were angry after not getting a penalty when Luis Suarez was fouled by Oxlade-Chamberlin but the Arsenal fans as well after Steven Gerrard should have been sent off for his second bookable offense when he took the legs from the Ox just a few minutes later.

“I’m not sure if it’s because it was just after that but it was certainly a clear penalty. Luis has just got a touch on the ball and Alex has just taken him inside the box in front of the referee’s eyes, so it was a strange decision,” Rodgers told BT Sport after the game.

The talk show host Piers Morgan went on to joke after the game on Twitter to claim that Arsenal’s January signing was in fact Howard Webb.
